Sounds promising? Then download the app
(currently version 1.2.0) for only 2.99 EUR
from the Apple AppStore. After connecting
the i-MX1 and do some wiring with the MIDI
interface of your computer or MIDI synthe-
sizer you are ready to go. However - don‘t
forget to update the the operating system
on your iPad to iOS 4.3 or later.
To give you an idea of what you can do with
the Yamaha app on the iPad, I‘ll describe
two scenarios in which the app makes good
service:
•As a handy drum pad, chord trigger,
and ispiring arpeggiator to input
MIDI-notes in a DAW such as Cubase
•To play sounds on the MOTIF-RACK
XS (or on another MIDI instrument,
which has no keyboard or no arpeg-
giator)
If you prefer to try on your own: start the
app „Arp & Dr Pad“ on your iPad, press the
gear icon in the upper right corner and go
to „Manual“ on for a brief introduction. By
the way, all apps from Yamaha feature a
guide that explains all the functions of each
application.
VIRTUAL KEYBOARD
PLUS CONTROLLER
You most likely have a keyboard to input
MIDI data in your Digital Audio Worksta-
tion (DAW). But: Does it also feature a lot
of arpeggio patterns and a control surface
with 16 drum pads? No? Then simply put
your iPad with the Yamaha app on your
production table. The app is also a nice
thing for the laptop solution, if there is a
lack of keys and pads, for instance „on the
road“. The app „Arp & Dr Pad“ helps and
perhaps brings you ideas that you wouldn‘t
have had with a standard MIDI keyboard.
The virtual keyboard with its arpeggiator
is reached by pressing the keyboard icon
at the top right of the screen. Although the
app is called Keyboard Arp & Drum Pad,
you must not necessarily use the arpeggia-
tor. The keyboard alone is handy for en-
tering MIDI notes and controller data into
a sequencer. The virtual keyboard can be
moved horizontally - as soon as you found
your desired octave you can lock the key-
board via KEYBOARD SCROLL LOCK for a
stable virtual fit.
The touchscreen of the iPad does not allow
touch-dynamic. So there is a fixed velocity
value of 100 by default. On the left of the
screen you will find the function VELOCITY,
which is activated via a button. Use the sli-
der on the left side to spontaneously set the
velocity of the notes or chords you are just
playing on the keyboard. This type of dyna-
mic control is of course unusual for pianists,
but is nice for the production of electronic
music. For example, all notes in a chord
will have the same velocity values - on a
normal keyboard this is virtually impossible
to achieve.
The slider on the left can also be used for
pitchbending, and also for the two MIDI-
controllers ASSIGN 1 / 2, which can be set
from the Utility menu (available via the gear
icon). By default they are assigned to MIDI-
controller numbers #74 and #75. So if you
want to change the pan position, set Assign
1 CC to controller number #10. Instead of
the classic modulation wheel a MODULA-
TION button is at hand. You can determi-
ne the speed, the modulation path or „the
wheel move“ should be passed, from the
Utility menu via the parameter „modulation
speed“. If set to „very fast“ the modulation
is effective very quickly after pressing the
button, of course.
THE ARPEGGIATOR AS
A SOURCE OF IDEAS
Now you should enjoy the Arpeggiator
(ARP ON) and keep the arpeggio patterns
on HOLD. With its 342 patterns the app
offers a variety of arpeggio figures from
different styles. For a good overview, sim-
ply unfurl the list (right of screen). Now
you can quickly go to each category, like
DrPC (drums & percussion), CPrc (chroma-
tic percussion), or ChSq (chord-sequence).
Good design: Drum Kit 1 with a total of 16 pads that offer
two sections for two velocity values
