Network settings
Network settings have to be programmed using the
software providedby the switchmanufacturer. Switches
canbeprogrammedwithacomputerconnectedtooneof
itsnetworkportsusingawebbrowsersuchasMicrosoft
®
Internet Explorer in a user-friendly way. Old style
‘command line’ programming is possible using a serial
RS232CconnectionusingtheWindows
®
Hyperterminal
software;theCommandLineInterface(CLI)thathastobe
usedwillbedescribedintheswitch’susersmanual.
Port-basedVLAN’shavetobeprogrammedonebyoneon
allswitches.OnthesecondarystarswitchRSTPshouldbe
enabledontheportsconnectedtotheotherswitchesinthe
system.RSTPshouldbedisabledonallotherportsandall
otherswitchesinthesystem.Connectthesecondarystar
switchtothenetworkonlyafterRSTPhasbeenenabled.

Switch IP address
The switch’s web based user interface can be accessed
using Microsoft
®
Internet Explorer. Out of the box,
everyswitch inthis examplewill havethe samedefault
IP address, so the rst thing to do is to connect each
switchonebyoneasasingledevicetoacomputerusing
anEthernetcrossovercable.Thenloginusingthedefault
IPaddressspeciedintheswitch’susersmanual,leaving
theusernameandpasswordempty.Tobeabletoaccess
theswitchesaftertheyareconnectedinthenetwork,it’s
besttochangetheIPaddressesofallswitchestoalogical
orderrangeonthecontrolnetworkthatyouwilluseforIP
servicesinthesystem,anddocumenttheaddressesinthe
systemprojectdocument.AftersettingthenewIPaddress
andsubnet maskstore the settingsand thenloginto the
webbaseduserinterfaceagainusingthenewIPaddress.
Connect to theswitch using a port plannedto be in the
DefaultVLAN.
VLAN and STP settings
ForDlinkswitchestheVLANsettingsareavailableunder
the‘L2features’tabinthefolderhierarchyontheleftside
ofthewebdisplay.Clickingthe‘StaticVLANentry’tab
producesalistofprogrammedVLANs.Usethe‘modify’
or‘add’buttonstosetuptheVLANs.Tosetthespanning
tree parameters access ‘Spanning Tree’ under the ‘L2
features’tab.Don’tforgettostoreallsettingsafterevery
change!
In theend locations theswitches’ defaultVLAN should
include ports1 and 2, anadditional CobraNet™VLAN
should include ports 3 to 8. Both VLANs should be
taggedandassignedtoports9and10.Onthesecondary
starswitchRSTPshouldbeenabledonthelongdistance
link ports only. Then test the system and ne-tune STP
settings.
